Christopher McBrearty

Christopher is biomedical scientist and innovator holding an honours bachelor’s degree in microbiology and a master’s degree in biomedical science from NUI Galway. Prior to, and during, his academic career, Christopher has a cumulative 7 years’ experience in an engineering company where he worked closely on the delivery of a novel protein synthesis plant and a novel ozone technology for the company. Following this, he worked in NUI Galway’s Launchpad where he coached student entrepreneurs, ran innovation led workshops, and pitch preparation workshops. As a former research associate, he spent 9 months in the Health Innovation Hub Ireland working on the HSE-HIHI Spark Ignite innovation competition. Currently, he is working on his own MedTech start-up, NanoDetect Devices, where he is developing a prostate cancer diagnostic test.

Christopher has a keen interest in mentoring, having coordinated NUI Galway’s largest student mentoring programme for 2 years, and recently founded a new postgraduate research student mentoring programme in NUI Galway.

He is a former recipient the Enterprise Ireland Student Entrepreneur of the Year, Outstanding MSc Biomedical Science Student, NUI Galway; and named in the Sunday Independent’s 30 under 30: The best and brightest of Ireland’s rising busines stars.
