Health Innovation Hub Ireland completes Clinical Evaluation of Axial3D’s AI-Powered Surgical Planning Technology
Health Innovation Hub Ireland (HIHI) has completed a clinical evaluation with Belfast-based health technology company Axial3D, gathering expert clinical feedback to support the ongoing development of its AI-powered software for personalised surgical planning.
Axial3D develops software that uses artificial intelligence to transform medical imaging scans into patient-specific 3D models. The technology is designed to support surgical planning, medical device design and personalised approaches to patient care.
As part of the HIHI engagement, Axial3D received feedback on current clinical processes, unmet needs and opportunities for innovation in planning for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) and Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) procedures.
The clinical evaluation brought together leading vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists, including Prof. Muhammad Tubassam, Mr. Mahmoud Alawy, Dr. Ian Davidson and Prof. Gerry O’Sullivan, who provided valuable insights into the practical requirements and challenges associated with procedural planning.
Positive clinical feedback and actionable recommendations
Feedback on Axial3D’s software offering was positive, with clinicians highlighting its simplicity and reduced requirement for manual input as key strengths.
The engagement also identified a number of actionable recommendations to inform Axial3D’s product development roadmap. These included the potential role of greater automation, improved interoperability, flexible image fusion and vessel deformation modelling in further enhancing the technology’s clinical utility.
The findings provide Axial3D with valuable real-world clinical insight as it continues to develop its technology and explore opportunities to support more efficient, personalised approaches to procedural planning.
The collaboration demonstrates the value of bringing health technology developers together with experienced clinical teams to assess emerging technologies in the context of real-world healthcare needs.
