Meet one of the winners of HIHI’s recent FemTech Innovation Call competition. Today we are spotlighting AVeta Medical a fetmtech medical device company that aims to revolutionise the treatment of vaginal atrophy.

The VITA AV product is a hormone free, safe, targeted therapy to treat the symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of the menopause (GSM). The technology has been patented.

HIHI FemTech Call Winners 2023

Health Innovation Hub Ireland announces 11 winning FemTech companies and products to watch for 2024

HIHI is delighted to announce the winners of its first ever Irish FemTech call to industry. This is set to be a trailblazer for Femtech industries in Ireland as it’s the first time that there has been a focus on innovations that address women’s health.  In total there were 37 applications, 11 were selected as winners and will receive further product development support from HIHI.

Applicants were selected based on novelty, the significance of the problem addressed, market and potential for future investment. What’s interesting is that five of the eleven winners had products that are considered ‘deep tech’ and 27 of the 37 companies had a female founders (73%).

Deep tech startups are those whose technology is based on tangible engineering innovation or scientific advances and discoveries applied for the first time as a product, often aiming to solve society’s biggest issues. (Deep Tech: Europe | Dealroom.co)

Speaking on the announcement of the winners, Dr Tanya Mulcahy, Director of Health Innovation Hub Ireland said: “I would like to congratulate the 11 companies and founders on becoming the first winning companies of the inaugural Femtech Innovation competition in Ireland. We have a massive opportunity to encourage, support and enable development of new innovations in FemTech and ensure that Ireland is firmly placed on the global FemTech map. These companies will go a long way in achieving that objective”.

Dr Mulcahy explained that there is huge opportunity to pool women’s health ideas and develop them. “While, this competition was specifically for products at prototype or market ready stage, I have no doubt that there are many more ‘ideas’ out there also and we intend to support this very early stage of FemTech innovations through a future programme.”

HIHI delighted to welcome new team member to HIHI HQ offices in Cork

HIHI is delighted to welcome Joann Kelleher (they/them) to the team at HIHI. Joann takes up the post of Research Support Officer. Joann previously held the post of Research Admin Assistant in the Oncology Clinical Trials Unit at CUH. Joann is also currently completing an MSc in Clinical Trials.

Joann’s education includes a BSC in Physiology, a PG Dip in Translational Cardiovascular Medicine and a PG Cert and PG Dip in Clinical Trials.

How our doctors are using AI in the HSE

A team of clinicians and researchers from Galway are using Artificial Intelligence to transform how we treat patients with kidney disease

The collaboration involves the Saolta University Health Care Group, HSE National Health Intelligence Unit, College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Science, University of Galway, The National Renal Office, HSE Integrated Information Services, Insight Data Analytics, Health Innovation Hub Ireland, and eHealth Ireland. It has been funded by the Public Service Innovation Fund operated by the Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform (DPENDR).

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive condition that affects approximately 10% of people worldwide. Some patients with CKD progress to kidney failure requiring lifesaving treatments like dialysis or kidney transplant. The Kidney Disease Clinical Patient Management System (KDCPMS) is an electronic health record to manage the care of patients receiving dialysis or kidney transplant.  One challenge faced by healthcare providers is extracting actionable information from large quantities of unstructured free text, such as clinical notes and outpatient letters, stored in the KDCPMS. This data in its current form is difficult to organise and use for making national decisions about kidney care in Ireland. Now, the renal AI project is using Artificial Intelligence Language Models to extract key structured information from the free-text clinical notes to inform national kidney disease strategy.

The AI powered solution will ensure uniformity and clarity in health records. This information is now being used to compare the quality of Irish patient care to other European and international nephrology centres, a previously impossible task.

Dr Conor Judge, a consultant nephrologist at Galway University Hospitals and senior lecturer in Applied Clinical Data Analytics at the University of Galway, and Clinical Lead in Health Innovation Hub Ireland, is leading this transformative project.

He expressed his excitement for the project, stating that “using Artificial Intelligence in this way will allow us to harness this rich data source to improve patient care in a way that has not been possible to date. We are grateful to the team in the Public Service Innovation Fund who support these types of initiatives that will improve our healthcare system in a meaningful way for patients, staff and the public.”

Dr Howard Johnson, Clinical Director of the HSE National Health Intelligence Unit, added; “This project could pave the way for similar initiatives across other parts of our health services to use the vast amounts of available and unused data to support the delivery of high-quality, efficient, and effective health care.”

Dr Steven Griffin, Manager, Health Innovation Hub Ireland, said; “The public service innovation fund plays a pivotal role in empowering those within our public service who are dedicated to the betterment of society. This collaboration harnesses clinical expertise, technical advancements, and a patient-centric approach to revolutionise the quality of life for some of our most vulnerable citizens. It exemplifies the transformative potential and imperative needed for lasting change with tangible benefits for renal patients and the healthcare system at large.”

This project will allow the National Renal Office to accurately measure key quality care parameters in the delivery of renal care nationally and help drive improvements in care” said the NRO Clinical Director., Prof. George J. Mellotte.

On 21st November 2023, Dr. Conor Judge, Dr. Claire Stenson, and Dr. Declan Sheppard were announced as winners of the Enterprise Ireland Health Innovation Hub Ireland Clinical Innovation Awards 2023. The HIHI Clinical Innovation Award is designed to support all healthcare professionals in Ireland to explore the commercial feasibility of their innovative ideas with the potential to transform the way medical care is delivered in Ireland and abroad. The Award welcomes innovative technologies at all stages of development from concept, early stage research through to more advanced projects.

Dr. Conor Judge: AI Revolutionizing Hypertension Management

Dr. Conor Judge,  is a Consultant Nephrologist, Electronic and Computer Engineer, PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Senior Lecturer in Applied Clinical Data Analytics at the University of Galway. His primary focus is applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions to enhance patient care, particularly in the realm of chronic conditions like hypertension. He leads the development of an AI Clinical Decision Support System (AI-CDSS) for Hypertension management at the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, University of Galway. This project uses data from randomised controlled trials to predict complex treatment decisions for persons with hypertension and is a testament to his commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with AI in healthcare.

The AI-BP system, a sophisticated platform utilizing state-of-the-art machine learning and deep learning approaches, aims to provide real-time, personalized treatment decisions based on clinical trial data. Dr. Judge’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI in healthcare has garnered him recognition, including prestigious awards and research funding. His innovation holds promise for comprehensive, personalized hypertension management for diverse patient populations.

Dr. Claire Stenson: Smart Pleuro – A Revolutionary Solution for Malignant Pleural Effusions

Dr. Claire Stenson is a surgical trainee in Upper Gastro Intestinal (GI) surgery at Tallaght University Hospital. Dr Stenson’s solution the Smart Pleuro device, is a groundbreaking solution for treating patients with malignant pleural effusion. Current solutions often fail, requiring repeat hospitalizations and negatively impacting patients’ quality of life. Smart Pleuro, aims to treat and prevent the recurrence of malignant pleural effusions, offering a more effective alternative, aiming to significantly improve patient outcomes.

Dr. Stenson’s innovation addresses a critical need in patient care, providing a promising solution that could reduce hospitalizations, re-interventions, and enhance the overall quality of life for those affected by malignant pleural effusions.

Dr. Declan Sheppard: Portable Ultrasound Device Enhancing Venous Access

Dr. Declan Sheppard, Consultant Radiologist and Clinical Director of Radiology at University Hospital Galway, aims to develop a novel ultrasound device designed to improve venous access. Recognizing the challenges in obtaining access to veins and the associated complications, Dr. Sheppard’s solution offers a more portable and accessible alternative to the current state-of-the-art devices.

This innovative ultrasound device aims to assist clinicians in gaining access to challenging veins, reducing delays in blood sampling, diagnosis, and treatment. Dr. Sheppard’s forward-thinking approach aligns with the pursuit of adopting the latest technologies to enhance clinical care and efficiency within the healthcare system.
