On Friday 30th September 2022, Health Innovation Hub Ireland held the second webinar in the HIHI Pulse webinar series entitled “Healthcare Data Management – Why is it so Important?

Hazel Chappell, Founder and Digital Managing Partner at ishca health Inc, Professor Donal Sexton, Consultant Nephrologist and Kidney Transplant Physician at St James’s Hospital, Clinical Associate Professor with Trinity College Dublin, Researcher with TILDA (the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing) and Principal Investigator with ADAPT, and William O’Brien, Director of Cybersecurity, Privacy and Forensics at PwC Ireland joined Deirdre Feehely, Nursing and Midwifery Information Officer for the South/ South West Hospital Group to discuss data management in healthcare, some of the biggest challenges associated with healthcare data management, their experience of data management, as well as providing advice to start ups with respect to data management.

The ALADIDN multiplier event was organised by Health Innovation Hub Ireland and took place on Thursday September 15th 2022. The event took place in person and online. HIHI invited guest speakers Dr Kevin J O’Sullivan, Rapid Innovation Unit, St John’s Hospital, Limerick, and Dr Christopher Soraghan, Design Innovation Lab, St James’s Hospital, Dublin. The event began with Dr Steven Griffin, Manager HIHI Galway, providing an overview of the ALADDIN project. Dr Kevin O’Sullivan and Dr Chrisotpher Soraghan then delivered their presentations on the types, application, and value of Additive Manufacturing (AM)/ 3D printing in healthcare. The Aladdin Programme was developed by an international consortia with expertise in AM, learning, skill development, and more, and is still available to anyone who would like to use it. On Friday 6th May 2022, speakers Tom Luby, Director TMC Innovation and Emily Reiser, Associate Director, TMC Innovation provided an overview of TMC Innovation, and how the Centre forms, fosters, recruits, and funds healthcare companies at NUI Galway to an audience of over 130 people online and in person. They discussed how they engage with and evaluate start-up companies, provide support to entrepreneurs as they broaden their vision and network, and perform diligence on the companies seeking to progress clinical and business milestones.

On Friday 22nd April 2022, Health Innovation Hub Ireland held the first webinar in the HIHI Pulse webinar series entitled “Female Innovators in HealthTech- Inspiring Our Future”.

Marian Kennedy, CEO and Founder of PPR Healthcare, Diane Nevin, CEO of GDTHealth Network and Aoife Ní Mhuiri, CEO and Founder of Salaso joined HIHI Director Dr Tanya Mulcahy to discuss their experiences in the sector and setting up their own company/ organisation, the main barriers they have encountered along the way, and supports for female innovators.

On the 27 th of October2021, Health Innovation Hub Ireland held a webinar entitled “German Market- How to Prepare for a Meeting with Potential Investors”.

This month we welcomed guest speakers Dr Samson Fung, Managing Director of Fung Consulting and Founder of Susavox Investments, Joanne Thiele, Senior Project Manager, Health Beacon and Dr Henrik Matthies, Managing Director of Health Innovation Hub Berlin. Throughout this webinar, the speakers discussed the healthcare system in Germany, strategies to engage with investors and to becoming a DiGA to get reimbursed.

On the 29 th of September 2021, Health Innovation Hub Ireland held a webinar entitled “Health Innovation ecosystem in Ireland”.

This webinar followed a different format with a panel discussion. The panel was moderated by HIHI Interim Director Dr Tanya Mulcahy with an excellent line up of panellists from across the health innovation sector including, Dr Sinead Keogh, Ibec, Clare Harney, HealthTech Ireland and Professor Martin Curley, Digital Transformation and Open Innovation (HSE).

On the 26th of February 2021, Health Innovation Hub Ireland held a webinar entitled “Intellectual Property (IP) for Start-ups and SMEs- Innovation and IP”. This was the sixth in the series of HIHI webinars. This month we welcomed Joe Doyle, Intellectual Property Manager, Enterprise Ireland. Joe works with companies to help them to understand the role and context of IP in the development of their business.

Throughout this webinar, Joe discussed the increasing role of IP in enterprise scalability and the fundamentals of an IP strategy while also highlighting available state supports to help develop your IP strategy. Joe outlined the rise of intangible value for start-ups and SMEs and how that can be captured for your business through the IP system.

Joe outlined how to develop an IP strategy and where to start with the process while also demonstrating the importance of developing an IP strategy as early as possible to ensure you can capture the intangible value early on. Joe also discussed some available supports such as the Enterprise Ireland IP Strategy Offer to help develop your IP strategy. During the Q&A session, Joe offered further information to attendees and outlined some key references and websites for further information.

On the 27th of November 2020, Health Innovation Hub Ireland held a webinar entitled “Public Procurement for Start-ups and SMEs-Part 2”. This was the fifth in the series of HIHI webinars. This month we welcomed Amanda Craven, Director of BWL Consulting and Mike McGrath, Managing Director of Arvo Procurement.During this webinar, Amanda provided tips and advice to attendees to help write a successful bid. She discussed the best approach to take when planning and developing a bid while also providing an insight into what steps should be taken. Amanda highlighted the importance of reviewing the bid, successful or unsuccessful, to ensure the next bid is easier.

Mike discussed the key principles of public procurement and the public procurement process. He highlighted the types of procurement procedures for above and below thresholds as well as discussing the tender evaluation process. Mike also spoke about procurement trends and resources including innovation procurement and SME friendly procurement.

During the Q&A session, both Amanda and Mike offered further information to attendees and outlined some key references and websites for further information.

On the 2nd of October 2020, Health Innovation Hub Ireland held a webinar entitled “Public Procurement for Start-ups and SMEs”. This was the fourth in the series of HIHI webinars. This month we welcomed Anna- Marie Curran, Partner and Head of the Procurement Law team in A&L Goodbody and Paul Maguire, SBIR manager, Enterprise Ireland.Throughout the webinar, Anna-Marie discussed European Union (EU) Procurement Opportunities for Start-ups and SMEs. Anna-Marie discussed the basic procurement rules, procurement in a pandemic and proactive EU measures.

Paul spoke about the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR), a pre commercial procurement initiative that is administered by Enterprise Ireland. This initiative aims to drive innovation across all sections of the Irish Public Sector via robust engagement with technology rich companies and organisations.

On the 14th of August 2020, Health Innovation Hub Ireland held a webinar entitled “IP as an Asset-IP Strategies for Start-ups and SMEs”.This month we welcomed guest speaker Sean Cummings. Sean is a European patent, trade mark and design attorney and Partner in the leading European IP firm Keltie LLP and Director of the firm’s Irish subsidiary, Keltie Limited, which he established in Galway in 2016.

Throughout the webinar, Sean discussed the various types of intellectual property (IP), why it matters and how to protect it. Sean also explained how to best time patent applications along with sharing the best piece of business advice he ever received.

On the 19th of June 2020 Health Innovation Hub Ireland held a webinar entitled “The Role of Digital Health in the Fight against COVID-19”. This month we welcomed our guest speakers Dr Shourjya Sanyal, CEO of Think Biosolution and Sonia Neary CEO and co- founder of Wellola.During the webinar Sonia and Shourjya provided an overview of digital health from different perspectives while also providing an insight into each company, the journey to date and the impact and future of digital health. Sonia and Shourjya also discussed the recent success of each company and how they are responding during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the 8th of May 2020 Health Innovation Hub Ireland held a webinar entitled “COVID-19- Challenges and Opportunities for the Medtech Industry”. The webinar was presented by David Scott, Senior Associate with BHSM Solicitors who works in the Healthcare and Life Sciences Department.Throughout the webinar David provided a brief overview of the medtech regulatory landscape pre COVID-19. He discussed the responses to COVID-19 from both regulatory and industry perspectives while he also spoke about the challenges and opportunities for the medtech industry post COVID-19.
