HIHI’s September spotlight company is Neurobell with their innovative portable pocket-sized brain monitor to detect seizures in newborn babies at the NICU bedside
Health Innovation Hub Ireland’s September spotlight company is Neurobell, a spin out from University College Cork and a company backed by Enterprise Ireland’s Commercialisation Fund.
This week marks the launch of our latest Clinical Evaluation study with the company which is set to transform neonatal care in Ireland and beyond. Read the full case study here https://hih.ie/downloads/case-studies/HIHI-case-study_Neurobell.pdf
Neonatal seizures rank among the most frequent neurological emergencies in newborns—but they often occur unnoticed. Continuous EEG (cEEG), the traditional gold standard, is hampered by high cost, resource demands, and the need for specialist interpretation—leaving many units under-resourced and babies at risk.
NeuroBell’s innovative, portable and wireless EEG device brings AI-powered seizure detection right to the NICU bedside. This technology promises to significantly improve access to brain monitoring—particularly in smaller hospitals or during neonatal transport.
The features of this novel medtech device include:
An 8-channel EEG system, compliant with neonatal standards
Rapid setup via a simple two-button interface
Wi-Fi streaming for remote expert review
Automated seizure alerts to support timely intervention
HIHI’s structured evaluation brought invaluable insights engaging clinicians across Cork University Hospital, University Hospital Galway and the Rotunda Hospital. HIHI facilitated engagement with neonatal consultants, paediatric neurologists, NICU nurses, clinical physiologists, and biomedical engineers. Extensive feedback on device ergonomics, infection control, software interface, integration with hospital IT systems, and workflow impact were also collected by HIHI.
Speaking as the study is launched, Dr. Mark O’ Sullivan, Neurobell’s Co‑founder, highlighted HIHI’s role: “The significant impact for me in terms of the value provided by HIHI was the business needs which means we’ve now built a better product and the regulatory needs which means now we have evidence that there has been human factors and user inputs that have informed the design prior to us getting to a design freeze.”
