HIHI launches first FemTech case study of 2025 with Altascience’s product Altaseal which is set to be a gamechanger for women’s contraception
Health Innovation Hub Ireland is delighted to launch our first FemTech case study for 2025 further demonstrating our commitment to improving women’s health in Ireland and closing the health gap. Altaseal, developed by the team at AltaScience is set to be a gamechanger for women’s contraception and the company is one of the winners of our first ever FemTech call to industry in 2023.
Around the world there are c220m women relying on permanent contraception via surgical tubal ligation to avoid pregnancy. An unmet need is to provide an option for women seeking minimally invasive, non surgical pain free contraception. The Altaseal product provides the solution as it is a hysteroscopic permanent contraceptive device which is a non surgical alternative to tubal ligation.
HIHI assisted the company by recruiting five clinicians with expertise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Rotunda Hospital and organised feedback sessions of this trailblazing ambulatory hysteroscopic contraception technology.
HIHI Dublin team Eimear Galvin and Jonathan Moran worked closely with the company and Stephen O’ Sullivan, Operations Director, AltaScience Ltd valued the contribution to the development of the product.
“HIHI has provided us with fantastic support in our product development though their Clinical / End-User Evaluation Project. One thing I immediately liked was the enthusiasm of HIHI and the up-front collaborative session to understand our needs before engaging the “right” users. The user sessions they organised were truly excellent. We were provided unrestricted access to expert clinical users and opinion leaders in a clinically representative setting where they were hands-on using the device in training models. This allowed them to provide extremely valuable insights to product development, including clinical considerations and different patient groups, ergonomic of use, compatibility with other device, critical aspects of user training and general logistics of use. The feedback is invaluable in ensuring we are developing the “Right Choice” for women seeking permanent contraception.
